How did we get on such a roller coaster  gaining weight, dieting, losing weight, and then gaining it all back and more... 

Again, it's in our genes.


From the beginning of time, until the invention of canned and frozen food, when winter came food got scarce.  In countries with cold winters, it was an annual famine.  There was nothing fresh to eat and for many people the pantry got pretty bare by spring.

Our ancestors adapted to cycles of feast and famine.


When times got lean, there was the risk of starvation.  But people adapted and their bodies were able to "turn down the thermostat" so they didn’t burn as many calories.  This was a smart move that got them through many a long, hard winter.

When summer came, the thermostat went up, their appetites came back, and they piled on the pounds to prepare them for the coming winter.

Sound familiar?  Doesn’t this sound a lot like a typical 1200 calorie diet?

We know our genes are hard wired like those of the ancient hunters.  So when we diet, it makes sense that we lose weight, but as soon as we’re off the diet we gain back what we lost and more. 

When we diet and we stop eating, our bodies think it’s a famine and turn down the thermostat. Once the famine’s over—or we’ve finished our diet—we start piling on the pounds. It’s right there in our hard wiring.

To break the vicious cycle, avoid drastic cutbacks. Recent research found that 90% of people gain weight after dieting.
